You might be someone experiencing stretch marks. There are actually many options for removing these unsightly remnants of stretched skin to give you a better body self-esteem. From natural folk remedies to plastic surgery, women are trying many methods. One of the newest is laser stretch mark removal therapy.

In 2002, dermatologists and plastic surgeons began using laser therapy to remove stretch marks. Similar to the laser used for Lasik eyesight correction, the laser uses ultraviolet light to interfere with the scar tissue within the skin, actually removing the subdermal scar layers. When the skin heals, the scar tissue that made up the stretch marks is replaced with normal, healthy skin growth!

Immediately after the procedure, most patients find that their skin feels raw and is sore; there may even be some blistering and the patient may feel like she has sunburn. It usually only takes a few days for this to heal, however, and pain is minimal and easily controlled. Many patients are very impressed with the results they have received from laser treatment. To make stretch marks less noticeable, several laser treatment sessions may be necessary, but most patients report a high level of satisfaction after treatment is complete.

You may be wondering, is laser treatment safe? This laser, called an excimer laser, has been in use among dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and eye doctors for decades. While stretch mark removal is a relatively new use for this laser, the laser itself is known to be safe. This type of removal of stretch marks is safer than traditional surgery had had a much faster recovery time and fewer complications. While complications are low and the laser is relatively safe, there are some disadvantages to the procedure, and potential patients should consider all the facts before making a decision.

The laser sessions can take a lot of time, and as already mentioned, several treatments will be needed for the marks to be less visible. Your doctor can help you determine how many sessions are needed. In addition, the laser works best with stretch marks that are red, purple, or brown in color; the laser does not respond as well to marks that are faded and white, especially if they are the same color as your skin. There are lasers that can detect these marks, but the procedure is usually more expensive.

In addition, about that cost – the price varies, and sessions can be anywhere from $400 to $1500. Insurance does not cover this cost. Your total price depends on the amount and location of the marks, but expects to spend several thousand at least. Be prepared for this treatment not necessarily to work for you – there is not yet clinical evidence to prove lasers as effective for stretch mark removal, and current evidence is anecdotal. Also, be aware that damaged tissues and scars will not be repaired by the laser – the marks will be less visible, but the skin texture may still feel lined.

Many practitioners say, there are no side effects or complications from laser removal, but there can be minor skin burns, irritation, bruising, blisters, and swelling in the skin that has been treated. Occasionally, the actual pigment of the skin can even be affected.

Laser removal of stretch marks will be most effective if done when the stretch marks are new, and if you have fair skin. You should be aware that if you are prone to hyperactive pigmentation of the skin, vitiligo, or if you have a dark complexion or a tan, you should be evaluated by your doctor before trying laser therapy. Always consult with a doctor before trying any cosmetic procedure!
