Hair loss is a very critical problem and just like youth and health, hairs once gone are almost impossible to recover. However, the latest hair implants technology tends to solve many people’s hair loss problems by getting back either full or fuller head of hair giving you a reviving look.
How the Hair Transplant is done?
The hair transplant surgery dates back to 1950 has and was done in the US. The hair transplant normally takes place in a clinic or hospital with local anesthesia to have a safe surgery. The surgery is done with a fine strip of hair-bearing scalp removed from the area with heavy hair, which is back of the head and then those hairs are implanted in the area with no or less hair to fill in the bald place.
The procedure begins with cleaning the scalp and then injecting anesthesia to numb the portion from where the hair strip will be removed. The hair strip, which is 3-4 inch long, is removed with a scalpel and that portion is planted and hidden by the hair surrounding that area.
Next, the removed strip is further divided into 500-2000 tiny grafts of a single or few hairs. The quantity of hair on each graft depends on the size of the portion to be implanted, the hair type, color, and quality as well. This whole process of transplantation takes 4-8 hours approximately whereas extra sessions might be needed if the patient requires heavy hair or is facing further hair loss even after the surgery.
Recovery Period
After the surgery, you might feel pain and your scalp may be aching for which the doctor gives painkillers such as anti-inflammatory or anti-biotic to be taken for more than a few days. Initially the surgeon might give you a surgical dressing for scalp to wear on it for a few days. Many people recover within 2-5 days after the surgery and go back to normal routine.
The implanted hair falls out within two to three weeks time after the surgery and you can notice the new hair growth in a few months period. Some people attain 60% hair growth within 6-9 months period. Sometimes doctors prescribe minoxidil (Rogaine) drug for a better hair growth after transplantation but its effectiveness is still unknown.
Cost and Side effects
The cost of hair transplant varies with the quantity of hair and the area that needs to be transplanted but normally it costs around $4000-$15000. The surgical procedure is seldom covered with insurance, which can be considered as a risk for many people.
The side effects of the surgery are quite normal like infection, bleeding, scarring, and inflammation of hair follicles for which antibiotics are prescribed by the surgeon. One potential risk after the surgery is ‘shock loss’ which is sudden hair loss of transplanted hair but that is not permanent mostly.
Hence, you can go for a hair implants to improve your look and self-confidence with better hair. However, you should know that this surgery did not grow new hair but only implants already grown hair to the bald area. You should always check for risks and side effects involved with the surgery and check for your health conditions before taking the decision of hair transplant.
