Memorization ability is very crucial for people of all ages. It is especially more important for children as they learn new things every now and then. Without memorization skill, it is impossible to learn other skills. For instance, to learn reading and writing, a child needs to memorize the alphabet. For singing a song, memorizing the lyrics is prerequisite. To learn a new language, it is indispensable to memorize the meanings of the words. In this article, we will discuss several helpful tips which will improve your children’s memorization ability.
The first and most necessary step to memorize anything is repetition. Doing the same thing over and over helps to memorize and thus learn that skill. So, tell your kids to practice more and more for enhancing their ability. A key point which you should keep in mind is that, unlike adults, doing the same task 3 or 4 times may not be enough for your children. Tell them to repeat the task until they have totally memorized it. Your supervision is very important. Ensure that they are doing the work as you have told them to, and also tell them helpful things which will help them to remember.
Different kids learn the same thing differently. Where some kids memorize a poem by reading it again and again, some other kids do that by writing the poem. Again, some kids learn quickly if they can see related pictures and videos. Some children memorize texts by reading it silently while others like to read loudly. So, it is very vital to know your kids’ learning style.
Depending on your children’s requirements, try to provide verbal description, related pictures and videos. If your kids learn quickly by listening rather than reading, you should be even more active. Reading their books and making sure they are listening with concentration can help your children to memorize the topic. Give relevant real-life examples where appropriate. After you have finished reading to them several times, ask them to re-tell the story to you.
Other ways to improve your kids memorization skill are teaching them how to play educative games like jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, cards, trivia, word making etc. Puzzle solving can be very helpful, especially puzzles that require rearranging pieces to make a whole picture. Show the final picture to your kids once and tell them to complete the picture without seeing the final one again.
