Sugaring hair removal is the natural way to remove unwanted hair from the body. This method of hair removal originated thousands of years ago in the Middle East. Numerous variations have since been created, but the original recipe only uses the natural ingredients of water, sugar, and lemon juice.
Sugaring hair removal is sometimes called sugar waxing although that is an inaccurate description. This confusion may happen for the reason that the sugaring hair removal is similar to waxing.
There are two methods used for sugaring hair removal. The first is using the traditional sugaring paste, which is a warm, thick substance that is applied to the skin in the differing path of the natural hair growth. A cotton strip is then used to take away the hair by pulling the strip in the direction of the hair growth.
If a sugaring gel is used then the gel is applied to the skin in the direction of the hair growth then, using cotton strips, it is pulled off in the opposite direction of the hair growth.
Advantages of Sugaring Hair Removal
Unlike waxing, which can only be done on small areas of the body at a time, sugaring can be performed on many larger areas of the body as the sugaring substance does not dry on the skin like wax. This allows the application and removal of larger areas of the body, which speeds the hair removal process.
Sugaring allows you the convenience of sugaring at home. You can purchase sugaring hair removal kits online, at the store or you can even make your own recipe. If you buy a kit, make sure you follow all instructions, as there are times when it is not appropriate to use sugaring hair removal products.
Cleanup is a breeze when using sugaring hair removal methods. Because the substances are all natural, they easily clean with water. Anyone who has ever used wax knows that it is very difficult to remove from the skin.
Sugaring allows for the immediate re-treatment of areas where hairs may have been missed. This allows for more thorough hair removal with less irritation.
Similar to waxing, the results of sugaring can last up to six weeks. Hair removal may become permanent in areas that receive repeated treatments.
Disadvantages to Sugaring Hair Removal
There may be difficulty in finding a professional salon/spa that uses the paste sugaring method. Some spas add sugar to their wax and claim to offer sugaring hair removal but this is misleading, as natural sugaring methods do not contain any wax. More spas use the gel sugaring method, but overall, sugaring hair removal services are difficult to find.
If you are mixing your own sugaring paste or gel, getting the right consistency can be challenging. If the paste is not mixed properly, it will not adhere to the hair and therefore will not pull out the hair.
Like waxing, at least 1/16th of an inch of hair is needed before the paste method can be used and a ј “is required for the gel mixture. That means that one will have to forego shaving for at least a couple of days.
Whether one is doing the sugaring method at home or at a spa, it is imperative that it be performed in a safe and sanitary way. All precautions and instructions should be explicitly followed as ignoring warnings and instructions can irritate and possibly injure the skin being treated. Injured skin is then vulnerable to infection.
Anytime you are removing hair by the root, especially in the highly sensitive areas of the chest, upper lip and genitals, there is going to be some pain involved. Many of those prefer the sugaring hair removal to waxing as is it reported to be less painful than waxing. Keep in mind that sugaring substances wash from the skin easier and, if the paste method is being used, the hair is pulled in the same direction as the hair growth.
