Have you ever wished your hair would grow faster? Like that time you let your neighbor’s niece in beauty school give you a makeover. Alternatively, that time you could not afford a hairdresser and ended up cutting your hair using a handheld mirror. You wished your hair would grow faster and erase the memories. These are the times when your hair growth seems to grind to a halt and you develop a sudden passion for hats and headscarves.

It is frustrating, I know. There is no magical formula that will get your wayward hair to grow back overnight. However, there are a few things for you can do to maximize your healthy hair growth, naturally.

Your hair only grows 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month and its foundation lies in the condition of your scalp. You can try nourishing the scalp and hair from the outside, but the nutrients you consume also play a vital role.

Hair is made up of protein, so keeping a healthy portion of whole, lean protein in your diet makes sense for hair health. Zinc, vitamin A and essential fatty acids (Omega-3 and -6) are also important for hair and scalp, so keep fish, nuts, green leafy vegetables and carrots high on your shopping list.

Some habits can have a negative effect, such as smoking. There are about 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke that are potentially lethal to hair follicles, causing hair growth to slow and may even lead to hair loss.

Smoking also makes hair small, bad, and dull. By reducing circulation to the scalp, your hair will not be able to get enough oxygen and nutrients for optimal growth – and the hair that does grow, will be weak and brittle. If you want that luscious hair back, quit smoking today.

Washing your hair too often can also lead to damage. The scalp’s natural oils help keep the hair protected, nourished, and gloriously glossy. Two to three washes a week is sufficient.

Make sure you use a good, gentle hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair in top condition.

Wet or damp hair is fragile. An older, slightly crazy hairdresser told me once to treat my damp hair “like a rose petal, because even a little rough treatment will leave a bruise.” I still believe him. Do not brush your hair until it is dry. It will break easily.

Excessive heat will damage your hair too. Think of an egg and how much protein it has. Your hair is made of protein and this is exactly what happens to it when you expose it to too much heat.

A good head massage with natural oils like almond, coconut or avocado is excellent for not only stimulating circulation to the hair follicles, but for nourishing the hair and scalp too. Lavender and rosemary are renowned for their soothing, antibacterial, and analgesic properties, so add some of these essential oils in as well. You will smell wonderful too!

These simple tips will have your obtain fast hair growth naturally.
